Going missing is a matter of life or death for tens of thousands of people each year. Missing People was founded in the early 1990s by sisters Janet Newman OBE and Mary Asprey OBE, inspired by the tragic disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh in 1986. Initially starting a Helpline from their home, they quickly became a beacon of hope for families of the missing.
For over 30 years, we’ve been there for children and adults who are at risk of danger or harm, and those who love them. We’ll always be there, for as long as it takes.
We’re there for those who go missing or who are thinking about going missing. We make sure we’re there to support the family and friends of the missing, during the search and beyond. However long it takes. We’re there to stand up for missing people, and their loved ones, making sure they’re treated fairly and equitably.
Our free frontline services include a Helpline, Support Workers, counselling, plus online guidance and advice. And so much more too: reaching people reported missing, appealing for the public’s help, creating spaces for those affected to be together and to share their experiences, training professionals, raising awareness, creating understanding and advocating for missing people and their loved ones.
We’re a registered UK charity. It’s our supporters that keep us open. Without donations and Gifts in Wills, our lifesaving services couldn’t support children adults and loved ones each year.
“Last week I almost took my own life. You helped me so much. Now I’m working on getting better.”
Our goals are to make sure going missing is understood as a crisis, and a matter of life and death. That missing people and their families get the right help at the right time. And that no missing person comes to harm.
We are in partnership with a wide range of agencies to make sure this happens.
Our work saves lives. It reaches vulnerable people at risk of danger. It offers comfort, support and a way through to families, friends and colleagues. Last year, we reached and directly helped thousands of people who went missing or were considering disappearing, and loved ones of missing people who are experiencing fear, anxiety, and loss.
Would you like to work for a dynamic, caring organisation which really makes a difference to vulnerable people throughout the UK and has been placed number 14 in the Best Not-For-Profit Organisations To Work for 2019?
